Prof. Timothy O’Brien is professor and chair of Medicine and Director of REMEDI at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway. He is consultant physician in Endocrinology and Dean of the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences at the NUI Galway.

Prof. O’Brien trained in internal medicine and endocrinology in Cork university, Mayo clinic, Cardiovascular Disease at the University of California.

Prof O’Brien established the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI)

and GMP cell manufacturing facility at NUI Galway. The main research interests include the translation of basic research findings in stem cell biology to regenerative approaches to peripheral vascular disease and diabetic complications in partnership with industry and the health service. His research brings together the basic research for translational research in stem cells and gene therapy. Prof O’Brien is coordinator of 2 current EU funded projects (EU FP7 REDDSTAR, EU H2020 NEPHSTROM) related to develop/test/validate a novel stromal cell therapy to treat complications of diabetes mellitus and progressive diabetic kidney disease.

Prof. O’Brien has a total of 297 publications; with 116 Senior Author Publications; 198

Journal Articles; 75 Reviews and 24 Book Chapters, with a H-Index of 46 (Web of Science).

BSc (1983) on genetics in Hangzhou University, MSc (1986) on mammalian development in the Institute of Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Natural Sciences and PhD (1993) on developmental biology in the Hubrecht Laboratory. He was trained on artificial chromosome technologies in the UK MRC Human Genetics Unit, and on Neuroscience in the MRC Brain Metabolism Unit and Edinburgh University. He was appointed as a Lecturer in 2002, Senior Lecturer in 2008 and Reader in 2011 by the University of Aberdeen, and a Professor of Fundamental Stem Cell Biology by the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway in 2011.

His current research has been focusing on modeling human genetic diseases in mice and in human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Key scientific achievements include (1) discovery of VPAC2 as a master switch of the circadian clock , (2) the discovery of a novel protein kinase ULK4 as a risk factor of neurodevelopmental disorders, (3) discovery of the association of PAC1 with hydrocephalus, and (4) generation of Disc1tr mouse model for schizophrenia. In NUI Galway, Shen has led a stem cell research program, set up the iPSC technology in Ireland, and derived iPSCs from >50 donors, including patients with Autism, Fragile X Syndrome, ALS, Retinitis Pigmentosa, as well as Long QT Syndrome. They are currently characterizing the iPSCs for understanding disease pathology and mechanisms and for drug discovery.
